NHRC-CPT Participates in Technical Consultative Meeting on Establishing a National Platform on Violence against Women and Girls

Dr. Rana Al Jammal participated, representing the National Human Rights Commission including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, in the technical consultative meeting organized by the National Commission for Lebanese Women on the establishment of a national platform on violence against women and girls, within the framework of Lebanon’s National Gender Equality Observatory.

The meeting aimed to discuss the conceptual and technical foundations of a comprehensive national platform that will consolidate existing programmes and projects, relevant partners, data related to violence against women and girls, available services and referral mechanisms, training programmes, national laws and policies, publications and resources, shelters, hotlines, legal services, psychosocial support, health and medical services, as well as ongoing awareness campaigns and upcoming events.

In this context, the National Commission for Lebanese Women, as Lebanon’s official national mechanism for the advancement of women’s rights and gender equality, plays a central role in proposing public policies, following up on the implementation of national strategies related to women’s rights, coordinating efforts among public institutions, civil society organisations, and international partners, and monitoring progress toward gender equality and non-discrimination.

Discussions during the meeting highlighted several key recommendations, notably the need for the platform to take into account the situations and specific psychological, social, and legal needs of women and girls subjected to violence, wherever they are and regardless of their background, without any form of discrimination. Participants also stressed the importance of integrating the needs of persons with disabilities and ensuring that the platform is designed in a user-friendly manner, in line with accessibility standards, to guarantee equal access for all.

The National Human Rights Commission, including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, underscored the importance of this initiative as a significant step toward strengthening national coordination, improving access to information and services, and supporting prevention and response efforts to violence against women and girls, in line with Lebanon’s constitutional, legal, and international human rights obligations.
