The National Human Rights Commission visits the Deputy Prime Minister to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation

A delegation from the National Human Rights Commission, including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, comprising the Commission’s President Dr. Fadi Gerges and Commissioner for International Relations and Media Bassam Al Kantar, visited H.E. the Deputy Prime Minister and President of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, Dr. Tarek Mitri. The meeting focused on ways to enhance joint cooperation, particularly in documenting violations of international humanitarian law.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of the proper implementation of Council of Ministers Decision No. 4-3 of 2026, especially with regard to strengthening coordination between the National Human Rights Commission and the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, in a manner that enhances monitoring and documentation mechanisms and ensures Lebanon’s compliance with its international obligations in this field.

The delegation also presented the Commission’s ongoing efforts in documenting violations, including the development of monitoring methodologies, evidence collection, and cooperation with relevant national and international stakeholders. In this context, Dr. Gerges handed Dr. Mitri a copy of the Commission’s 2025 annual report, along with a study entitled: “The Scope of Responsibility and International Obligations in the Context of Armed Conflict in Lebanon.”

The meeting further addressed a set of proposals related to diplomatic and human rights engagement at the level of the United Nations Human Rights Council, particularly during its 62nd session, scheduled to take place from 15 June to 10 July 2026 at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. These efforts aim to mobilize international support for Lebanon’s initiatives, strengthen accountability, justice, and ensure that perpetrators do not enjoy impunity.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on the importance of continued coordination and consultation among all relevant national stakeholders, in support of efforts to protect human rights and ensure respect for the rules of international humanitarian law.
