Lebanon Under Fire: Human Rights Watch Warns of a Humanitarian Catastrophe in the Face of Israeli Strikes

A report by Human Rights Watch highlights the devastating impact of large-scale Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon on April 8, 2026, describing a situation that risks escalating into a humanitarian catastrophe. According to the report, over 100 strikes were launched within minutes, killing more than 300 people and injuring over 1,150, making it the deadliest day since the escalation began in March. The findings are based on field research, interviews, and verified visual evidence.

The report, authored by Ramzi Kaiss, places particular emphasis on the systematic targeting and destruction of key infrastructure, notably bridges over the Litani River. These strikes have effectively severed southern Lebanon from the rest of the country, leaving tens of thousands of civilians isolated and unable to access essential services such as food, medical care, and humanitarian aid. The Qasmieh bridge, although damaged, remains the last operational lifeline for the region.

Humanitarian conditions are rapidly deteriorating. Local authorities and medical staff report severe shortages of supplies, closure of markets and pharmacies, and increasing risks for hospital operations. Medical personnel have been forced to live inside hospitals, while patients, including those requiring dialysis, face life-threatening barriers to treatment. The World Health Organization has confirmed that multiple hospitals have already shut down.

Human Rights Watch underscores that even if infrastructure is considered a military objective, attacks must comply with international humanitarian law, particularly the principles of proportionality and protection of civilians. The organization warns that the scale and pattern of destruction may constitute unlawful attacks.

The report calls on the international community to act urgently, including suspending arms transfers to Israel and ensuring accountability for alleged war crimes. It stresses that failure to act risks deepening civilian suffering and enabling further violations with impunity.
