Rida Azar, member of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture at the National Human Rights Institution, participated in a meeting of the Working Group on Prisons, held at Roumieh Prison, as part of the regular follow-up on detention conditions and efforts to strengthen coordination among relevant stakeholders.
The Working Group focuses on improving conditions of detention, reducing prison overcrowding, and enhancing respect for the rights of detainees, particularly with regard to pre-trial detention, physical and mental healthcare, the acceleration of judicial procedures, and the activation of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
Throughout the year, the Group discussed a number of pressing issues, most notably addressing severe overcrowding in prisons, supporting access to healthcare services and medications, improving mechanisms for the transfer of detainees and the conduct of trials, and formulating practical recommendations aimed at limiting arbitrary detention and strengthening legal safeguards for persons deprived of their liberty, in addition to supporting initiatives that contribute to improving infrastructure and living conditions within prisons.
Rida Azar’s participation in this meeting falls within the mandate of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture to monitor places of detention and contribute to efforts aimed at aligning prison management practices with national and international human rights standards.
