The National Human Rights Commission, including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (NHRC-CPT), participated, represented by Dr. Rana Al-Jammal, in all regional workshops dedicated to the preparation of a guidance manual on best practices and experiences in human rights education in primary, intermediate, and secondary schools across the Arab region.
These workshops are organized by the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, in cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region. They aim to develop a practical guide grounded in regional educational experiences and aligned with international human rights standards.
Throughout her participation, Dr. Rana Al-Jammal contributed the expertise of NHRC-CPT and actively engaged in discussions and in the drafting of the guide’s content, with a focus on integrating core human rights concepts into educational processes and adopting methods and mechanisms that support a human rights-based approach to education.
NHRC-CPT affirmed that human rights education is a key institutional priority, as it constitutes a fundamental pillar in building just, inclusive, and sustainable societies. The Commission emphasized that integrating human rights principles into school curricula contributes to the development of students’ knowledge, values, and skills, while reinforcing the principles of human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, freedom, and justice.
The Commission also acknowledged the challenges associated with integrating human rights concepts into educational curricula, while underscoring the significant opportunities that societies can gain by educating future generations in a culture of human rights. In this regard, NHRC-CPT reiterated its commitment to advancing this agenda through clear and participatory plans.
Furthermore, NHRC-CPT stressed the importance of engaging teachers, parents, and students in relevant consultations and discussions, listening to the voices of children and youth, and ensuring meaningful participation. Particular attention was given to the inclusion of students with disabilities and to facilitating their full and equal access to all educational and related activities.
This participation reflects NHRC-CPT’s continued commitment to promoting human rights education and supporting regional efforts aimed at developing effective educational tools that contribute to embedding a culture of human rights across the Arab region.
