The National Human Rights Commission of Lebanon, including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, participated, represented by its President Dr. Fadi Gerges, in the Annual General Assembly of the Francophone Association of National Human Rights Institutions (AFCNDH), held on 31 March 2026 in Geneva, on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
The meeting was hosted by the Permanent Representation of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie in Geneva, which the Commission thanks for its generous hospitality. It brought together representatives of national human rights institutions from across the Francophone space, providing a platform for exchange, coordination, and strengthening collective engagement in response to the growing challenges facing the international human rights system.
Discussions focused on enhancing the role of national human rights institutions within the Francophone community, particularly in protecting fundamental rights, reinforcing institutional independence, and developing mechanisms for cooperation and solidarity. Participants also addressed shared priorities related to strengthening compliance with international human rights standards.
On this occasion, Dr. Fadi Gerges emphasized the importance of reinforcing collective action among national institutions, especially in a context marked by multiple and overlapping crises. He highlighted the central role played by national human rights institutions in monitoring and documentation, advancing accountability, and protecting vulnerable groups, in line with the Paris Principles and relevant international standards.
He further underscored the importance of the Francophone space as a framework for solidarity and knowledge exchange, enabling national institutions to enhance their impact on public policies and to better address emerging challenges, including those related to conflict, displacement, and the rule of law.
This participation forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its international engagement and to contribute actively to regional and global networks, in support of the promotion and protection of human rights in Lebanon.
