{"id":7896,"date":"2026-07-27T11:32:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T08:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nhrclb.org\/?p=7896"},"modified":"2026-07-27T11:32:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T08:32:57","slug":"unesco-adds-mount-amel-castles-to-the-world-heritage-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nhrclb.org\/en\/archives\/7896","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO Adds Mount Amel Castles to the World Heritage List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNESCO has inscribed a group of <strong>five historic castles in Lebanon&#8217;s Mount Amel region<\/strong> on both the <strong>World Heritage List<\/strong> and the <strong>List of World Heritage in Danger<\/strong>, following an emergency review prompted by the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The five castles were recognized for their exceptional architectural and historical significance, reflecting nearly nine centuries of fortified architecture that blends <strong>Crusader, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and local Lebanese influences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the newly inscribed sites is <strong>Beaufort Castle (Qalaat al-Shaqif\/Shaqif Arnoun)<\/strong>, a prominent Crusader fortress that has long been a symbol of southern Lebanon&#8217;s rich cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Israel objected to the inscription, particularly the inclusion of Beaufort Castle, claiming that Hezbollah had used the site and its surroundings for military purposes. Lebanon rejected these allegations, stating during the UNESCO Committee meeting that the castles have been used <strong>exclusively for cultural and tourism purposes<\/strong> since Israel&#8217;s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, and accused Israeli media of misrepresenting tourist infrastructure as military installations.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO reaffirmed that all World Heritage nominations are evaluated according to the same technical criteria and procedures and that the organization does not take positions on political disputes.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate decision, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee also placed the ancient city of <strong>Tyre<\/strong>, one of Lebanon&#8217;s most important Phoenician archaeological sites, on the <strong>List of World Heritage in Danger<\/strong>, citing the damage and risks resulting from the recent conflict in southern Lebanon. Tyre, Lebanon&#8217;s fourth-largest city, was subjected to intense Israeli airstrikes before the ceasefire that ended the latest hostilities.<\/p>\n<p>The inclusion of the Mount Amel castles on the World Heritage List, together with the recognition of the threats facing Tyre, highlights the international community&#8217;s growing concern for the protection of Lebanon&#8217;s cultural heritage during times of armed conflict.<\/p>\n<div class=\"social_share_container desktop\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"dmstextid\" class=\"text\" data-charcount=\"578\">\n<div class=\"article_full_text\">\n<div class=\"article-text-details\">\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"245\">On <strong data-start=\"3\" data-end=\"18\">3 June 2026<\/strong>, the Israeli army released photographs of a <strong data-start=\"63\" data-end=\"93\">change-of-command ceremony<\/strong> held by the <strong data-start=\"106\" data-end=\"124\">Golani Brigade<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"128\" data-end=\"166\">Beaufort Castle (Qalaat al-Shaqif)<\/strong>, after Israeli forces had captured the historic fortress several days earlier.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"247\" data-end=\"333\">In a post on social media, the Israeli military&#8217;s Arabic-language spokesperson stated:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"337\" data-end=\"456\">&#8220;Beaufort Castle, in southern Lebanon, hosted the Golani Brigade&#8217;s change-of-command ceremony.
