<\/p>\nOn the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Working Group on Torture Prevention (WGTP), in collaboration with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and with the support of the European Union’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), organized a high-level roundtable discussion entitled”Accountability, Protection, Recovery: Supporting Survivors of Torture in Lebanon.”<\/p>\n
The event aimed to examine the challenges faced by survivors of torture in Lebanon, identify ways to strengthen referral pathways, and support specialized protection, legal, psychosocial, and rehabilitation services amid the country’s ongoing crises and the consequences of the recent war.<\/p>\n
The Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) participated in the roundtable through its members Dr. Josiane Madi Skaff, Mr. Raymond Medlej, and Ms. Rida Ramez Azar, accompanied by Ms. Rana Nasser El Jammal, Lawyer and Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission.<\/p>\n

The discussion brought together representatives of national institutions, judicial authorities, international organizations, donor agencies, and civil society organizations to exchange views on the prevention of torture, the protection of the rights of persons deprived of their liberty, access to justice for survivors, and the strengthening of national support and rehabilitation mechanisms.<\/p>\n
Participants examined the principal challenges facing survivors of torture in Lebanon and explored practical measures to enhance institutional coordination, improve referral pathways, reinforce accountability, and ensure access to comprehensive rehabilitation services, in line with Lebanon’s national and international obligations under the Convention against Torture and other relevant human rights instruments.<\/p>\n
The participation of the NHRC-CPT reaffirmed the Commission’s steadfast commitment to preventing torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. The Commission also underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation with national institutions, judicial authorities, international partners, and civil society organizations to promote accountability, protect the rights of detainees and survivors, and uphold human dignity and the rule of law.<\/p>\n
