The Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Lebanon, Tarc\u00edsio Costa, visited the headquarters of Lebanon\u2019s National Human Rights Commission, including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, in a meeting that underscored growing momentum for bilateral cooperation on human rights.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Costa was received by the Commission\u2019s President, Dr. Fadi Gerges, alongside Commissioner for International Relations and Media Bassam Al Kantar. He was accompanied by Minister-Counselor Felipe Goulart and Counselor Pablo Romero.<\/p>\n
During the visit, Costa outlined Brazil\u2019s institutional framework for promoting and protecting human rights, highlighting the role of the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, as well as cross-government initiatives and state-level programmes. He pointed to the depth of Lebanese\u2013Brazilian ties, praising the Commission\u2019s work, particularly following the recent inauguration of its official headquarters under the patronage of the President of the Republic.<\/p>\n
The Ambassador also signaled the Embassy\u2019s readiness to deepen engagement with the Commission, including through joint seminars, dialogue platforms, and outreach initiatives targeting the Brazilian community in Lebanon, in cooperation with the Brazilian Cultural Center.<\/p>\n
For his part, Gerges welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations. He outlined the Commission\u2019s mandate, including its role in preventing torture, documenting violations of international humanitarian law, handling complaints related to human rights abuses, and contributing to the development and implementation of Lebanon\u2019s National Human Rights Plan.<\/p>\n
Al Kantar highlighted the Commission\u2019s international engagement, particularly its ongoing accreditation process with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions within the UN system. He noted that Brazil\u2019s National Council for Human Rights is pursuing a similar process, with its application expected to be reviewed later this year.<\/p>\n
