data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"1214\">The conference brought together more than <strong data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"818\">200 participants<\/strong>, including speakers from several ministries and official bodies in the Kingdom of Bahrain, representatives of national human rights institutions members of the Arab Network, the <strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1102\">United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region<\/strong> affiliated with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the <strong data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1224\">United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)<\/strong>, as well as representatives of UN agencies, international and regional organizations, civil society institutions, human rights defenders, a distinguished group of experts, academics, and consultants, in addition to several ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"1214\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4095\" src=\"https:\/\/nhrclb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/612984311_18548609347005868_7809523159765011306_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"865\" height=\"496\" data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"1738\">During the General Assembly meetings, held on <strong data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1529\">12 and 13 January<\/strong>, the presidency of the Arab Network was transferred from the <strong data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1662\">National Centre for Human Rights of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan<\/strong> to the <strong data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1737\">National Institution for Human Rights of the Kingdom of Bahrain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1795\"><strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1795\">Bahraini Minister Praises the Network\u2019s Efforts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1797\" data-end=\"2115\">H.E. <strong data-start=\"1802\" data-end=\"1830\">Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi<\/strong>, Minister of Social Development of the Kingdom of Bahrain, commended the efforts of the Arab Network in organizing this high-level conference, congratulating the National Institution for Human Rights in Bahrain on assuming the <strong data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2114\">rotating presidency of the Network for the year 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2468\">He emphasized that the conference comes at a time of growing shared responsibilities to protect children\u2019s rights amid rapid digital transformations, noting that it constitutes a leading platform for showcasing national experiences, exchanging regional and international expertise, and strengthening joint cooperation in the field of child protection.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2557\"><strong data-start=\"2474\" data-end=\"2557\">Samar Al-Haj Hassan: A Commitment to a Participatory and Comprehensive Approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2559\" data-end=\"2824\">Ms. <strong data-start=\"2563\" data-end=\"2586\">Samar Al-Haj Hassan<\/strong>, former Chairperson of the Arab Network, stated that the conference and the 25th General Assembly are held under a highly significant theme, reflecting the continuation of the Network\u2019s journey since its launch in <strong data-start=\"2801\" data-end=\"2823\">Nouakchott in 2011<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2826\" data-end=\"3194\">She added that, through its General Assembly, Executive Committee, and General Secretariat, the Network continues its efforts to promote the values of human dignity and justice, stressing that the conference on <strong data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3083\">\u201cProtecting Children in the Digital Space\u201d<\/strong> embodies the Network\u2019s commitment to addressing emerging issues through a participatory and holistic approach.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3264\"><strong data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3264\">Al-Derazi: A Dialogue Platform to Address Digital Challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3266\" data-end=\"3787\">For his part, H.E. Engineer <strong data-start=\"3294\" data-end=\"3317\">Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi<\/strong>, Chairman of the National Human Rights Network and President of the National Institution for Human Rights in Bahrain, affirmed that the conference serves as an important dialogue platform highlighting the growing challenges faced by children in the digital space, and the consequent need for continuous development of legislation and preventive measures, as well as the establishment of effective protection mechanisms that keep pace with rapid digital transformations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3789\" data-end=\"4042\">He noted that the digital environment is among the areas where children\u2019s rights face increasing challenges, including exploitation, cyberbullying, privacy violations, and misuse of data, which has reinforced international attention to child protection.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4044\" data-end=\"4117\"><strong data-start=\"4048\" data-end=\"4117\">Sultan Al-Jamali: The Need for Integrated Institutional Responses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4119\" data-end=\"4506\">H.E. <strong data-start=\"4124\" data-end=\"4155\">Sultan bin Hassan Al-Jamali<\/strong>, Secretary-General of the Arab Network, stated that the digital space has become an integral part of the lives of children and adolescents, offering opportunities for learning and communication, while at the same time opening the door to increasing cyber threats, particularly in conflict-affected areas lacking adequate legal and digital protection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4508\" data-end=\"4874\">He added that despite efforts by governments and national institutions, legislative and regulatory gaps persist, stressing the need for integrated institutional responses grounded in international standards and strengthened regional and international partnerships to ensure a safe and inclusive digital space that safeguards children\u2019s dignity and rights everywhere.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4876\" data-end=\"4948\"><strong data-start=\"4880\" data-end=\"4948\">Arab Recommendations on Protecting Children in the Digital Space<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4950\" data-end=\"5017\">The conference concluded with a set of recommendations calling for:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5018\" data-end=\"5355\">\n<li data-start=\"5018\" data-end=\"5142\">\n<p data-start=\"5020\" data-end=\"5142\">The enactment of legislation criminalizing and penalizing behaviors that violate children\u2019s rights in the digital space,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5143\" data-end=\"5182\">\n<p data-start=\"5145\" data-end=\"5182\">Restricting harmful online content,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5183\" data-end=\"5355\">\n<p data-start=\"5185\" data-end=\"5355\">Strengthening protection mechanisms against exploitation and cyber violations, in line with international standards and with due consideration to cross-border cybercrime.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5357\" data-end=\"5810\">The recommendations also emphasized the establishment of legal and procedural frameworks to protect children\u2019s personal data across all digital platforms, obliging digital service providers to adhere to responsible business conduct, adopting strict measures to prevent exploitation and privacy violations, and urging States to adopt unified standards to combat cybercrime and prevent offenders from exploiting jurisdictions with weaker legal frameworks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Fadi Gerges, President of the National Human Rights Commission, including the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, participated in the 25th General Assembly of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) and its accompanying annual conference, held in the Bahraini capital, Manama, under the title:\u201cProtecting Children in the Digital Space: Challenges, Legislation, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4099,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[157],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-4105","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-statements-and-speeches-en"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
