Yet, despite repeated domestic and international calls for accountability, the investigation into the causes and responsibilities has faced years of <strong data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"882\">obstruction, interference, and delays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"885\" data-end=\"919\">\ud83d\udd17 <strong data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"916\">Read the full statements<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1295\">\n<li data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1072\">\n<p data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"1072\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2025\/08\/04\/lebanon-five-years-without-justice-for-port-explosion-victims\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"1070\">Human Rights Watch \u2013 Five Years Without Justice<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1295\">\n<p data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1295\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2025\/08\/lebanon-5-years-without-justice-for-port-explosion-victims-comprehensive-and-unobstructed-investigation-needed\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1295\">Amnesty International \u2013 Comprehensive Investigation Needed<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1297\" data-end=\"1686\">Judge <strong data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1318\">Tarek Bitar<\/strong>, leading the domestic investigation, faced ongoing legal and political obstruction, including lawsuits, refusals to cooperate by top officials, and institutional non-compliance. Although the inquiry resumed in 2025 with support from newly elected leadership, including <strong data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1613\">President Joseph Aoun<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1648\">Prime Minister Nawaf Salam<\/strong>, full accountability remains elusive.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1688\" data-end=\"1732\">Human rights groups reiterated the need for:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1967\">\n<li data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1788\">\n<p data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1788\">An <strong data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1788\">independent and obstruction-free investigation<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1881\">\n<p data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1881\"><strong data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1811\">Judicial reforms<\/strong> to close legal loopholes used to shield officials from accountability<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1882\" data-end=\"1967\">\n<p data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1967\">A <strong data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"1909\">transparent process<\/strong> that ensures the full chain of responsibility is revealed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"2070\">\n<p data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"2070\">\u201cJustice delayed is justice denied,\u201d said Reina Wehbi, Lebanon Campaigner at Amnesty International.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2211\">\n<p data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2211\">\u201cThis is a test of Lebanon\u2019s commitment to human rights and the rule of law,\u201d said Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon Researcher at Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2472\">The <strong data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2264\">National Human Rights Commission of Lebanon<\/strong>, including its <strong data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2323\">Committee for the Prevention of Torture<\/strong>, joins the call for <strong data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2382\">truth, justice, and accountability<\/strong>, and underscores the urgency of protecting the integrity of Lebanon\u2019s judicial processes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the fifth anniversary of the catastrophic Beirut Port explosion that killed at least 236 people and injured more than 7,000, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch issued a joint statement condemning the Lebanese authorities\u2019 failure to deliver justice and truth to victims and their families.
